New Pro-Life Law Passes in Indiana
HB 1522 Signed into Law
Restricts Abortion Access in State
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (March 8, 2023) - Indiana has passed a new law that restricts abortion access in the state. The bill, known as HB 1522, was signed into law by Governor Eric Holcomb on Wednesday evening.
The new law bans most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. It also requires minors to obtain parental consent before getting an abortion and prohibits abortions based on the race, sex, or disability of the fetus.
The law is the latest in a series of restrictive abortion laws that have been passed in Republican-led states in recent months. Supporters of the law say it is necessary to protect unborn children, while opponents argue that it is an unconstitutional restriction on women's rights.
The law is expected to face legal challenges. A federal judge has already blocked a similar law in Ohio, and the Indiana law is likely to be challenged as well. However, the law is expected to remain in effect until it is overturned by a court.
