Steve Gleason Honored with Arthur Ashe Courage Award at ESPYs
Former Saints Player's Inspiring Speech Moves Audience
Bound to a wheelchair since 2001 Gleason has become an advocate for those living with ALS
As Steve Gleason stared at the football hanging at the top of its arc he couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia. It had been nearly 15 years since he had last taken a snap under center for the New Orleans Saints and in that moment all of the memories came flooding back.
But this wasn't just any football game. This was the ESPYs and Gleason was there to receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award an honor given to athletes who have shown extraordinary courage in the face of adversity.
Gleason's story is one of inspiration and perseverance. In 2001 he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the body's motor neurons. ALS eventually paralyzed Gleason and he now uses a wheelchair to get around.
But Gleason has never let his disability define him. Instead he has used his platform to raise awareness about ALS and to advocate for those living with the disease. In 2013 he founded Team Gleason a non-profit organization that provides equipment technology and services to people with ALS.
Gleason's acceptance speech at the ESPYs was a powerful reminder of the human spirit. He spoke about the importance of never giving up and of always fighting for what you believe in.
"I'm not here to tell you that I'm a hero," Gleason said. "I'm just a guy who's trying to make a difference in the world. And if I can do that then anyone can."
Gleason's speech was met with a standing ovation and it was clear that he had touched the hearts of everyone in the audience. He is an inspiration to us all and his story is a reminder that anything is possible if you never give up.
